never are able to be emailed or im'ed? Are they ashamed of what they are saying or just do not want to be confronted with comments on their rude comment?

Yes, I hate that too.
They are just horrible people, who are probably incapable of defending their comments in serious debate, and don't want to be confronted by people who can challenge their nonsense. Some are just very sad litttle people, sitting alone in their rooms venting their spleens onto Yahoo; others are religious fanatics who don't have an original thought in their head. When push comes to shove, I actually feel sorry for most of them.
Both my e-m and i-m are open. I do, quite often, get abusive messages sent to both - in which case I just block that person.
Several times I have had very interesting discussions/arguments with people on a topic about which we disagree; and there are a couple of people I now chat to regularly.
Maybe all the nonsense would stop if Yahoo forced everyone to leave at least their e-mail open.

Yes to both your questions, comments. I guess they have little confidence in themselves. They like to aggravate, irritate, degrade, and not take responsibility for their words and actions. I guess you could call them spineless, chicken, wimps. Usually what they write reflects the who of their character and what sort of person they are. Garbage, degenerate in, garbage, degenerate out. Like the person that has the ID " I went to bed with your mom" What sort of an answer is he going to give? (Maybe it's not a he.) What's that say about that persons mentality and where there head is? I guess it's best just to pass this person;s answer by and go on. The answer probably won't be worth reading and be a waste of time.

They're gutless creeps. They are the same people who bad-mouth other users of the site and circulate gossip about them, but can't be contacted.
