So what other "truth" are you offering?
Rather than lie say "I rather not say".
If pressed, then add "This will be hurtful. So I rather not say".
If pressed again, change the subject or tell the truth.
Lying never the stop hurt and really hinds nothing.

Never. Sometimes the truth hurts but even so, tell the truth... Uh, wait a minute. It depends on the situation and what the lie pertains to. For example, my SO knows I'm sensitive about my weight and I ask if I look fat. Well, he knows that the truth may send me to the window's ledge. In that case, he should probably lie.

When the truth will endanger someone's life or even your life....when more harm will be done by revealing the truth...then feel free to lie....
