It could be because there are 3 holidays well 4 if you count Holloween, that all come right after another - Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New years. Or it could be the fact that people celebrate different Holidays, so a Jewish person doesn't want to hear Merry Christmas, an African doesn't want to hear Merry Christmas. Happy Holidays covers every holiday thats celebrated by all different people. I kinda see as some form of racism in a way, another Holiday not being accepted like another race not being accepted. I hope this does not offend anyone as that is not my intention.

Christmas is the National holiday. If other religions wish to celebrate their religious holiday during the same season, OK with me. But that doesn't change the reason for Christmas. Although no one knows the exact date certain, it was about this time of the year that Jesus the Christ was born. So I say Merry Christmas. If someone wants to have a merry something else, that's their choice.
MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Most people didn't get offended by Merry Christmas. A few, very few people (ACLU and the likes) thought they shouldn't have to hear Merry Christmas because *somebody *might* get offended by the name Christ, even though that is the purpose and origin of the holiday. If you don't believe in the purpose of the holiday, just don't celebrate it. Why would you get offended about somebody elses beliefs?
Well, Walmart found out last year that millions of people would get offended about NOT being able to celebrate CHRISTMAS. Last year they banned Merry Christmas from their stores, websites etc. for "happy holidays". After their sales got hit because they didn't want to celebrate Christmas, its back this year...
Why would you celebrate a holiday anyhow if you don't believe in its purpose?
Could you imagine a white suprimist being offended by Martin Luther King day and demanding he not having to hear it?
Good grief. Should we quit calling it a Christmas tree?
If you don't beleive in Christmas, go to work next Monday. Everybody is looking for a free ride. Don't take a day off because *I* believe something.

My family actually just sent a Christmas card to some place in New York trieng to get rid of "Merry Christmas".

I think some people use the term Happy holidays to combine Christmas and New Years.

I believe that they are using happy holidays because not all believe in christmas. But if you believe in Christmas, then say Merry Christmas to whom ever you want.
Merry Christmas!!

Because it is impossible to know who celebrates Christmas, or Kwanzaa, or Hanukkah etc...
Some people become offended w/o realizing that you are just trying to wish them well. It is better to just say Happy Holidays to those you aren't sure of and Merry Christmas to those whom you are sure of.
Also, in stores many of the non practicing people are screaming discrimination because their "holiday" isn't celebrated by the stores etc...

âºPolitical Correctness...
Have you heard about the Rabbi (Jewish) in Seattle, Washington who ordered to have the Christmas trees in a public library taken down because it offended non-Christians?
I think it's ridiculous. Happy Holidays is supposed to include all religious holidays (Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, etc.) while
Merry Christmas is only for Christians.

,Nor should your question. It is interesting that you needed to disclaim that.
It it not about Christmas. Its about people, and company's being afraid of being sued. They can't afford to piss off the other religions.
That said: "MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU AND YOU FAMILY"
