it keeps on flashing for several hours. what could be the explanation on this?

Sorry but all the above answers are stupid, you have a switch going bad because none of the above things would happen with the switch off! Change the switch!

I had that experience once at a store my mom was renting. Turns out the hot and neutral wires had been reversed at the breaker. After I corrected the wiring, the flashing stopped. It may also happen if the switch is wired in the neutral line instead of the hot line.

They are shorting out. Either replace the bulbs or the ballast.
