I suspect that the phenomenon is a result of the earth's magnetic field. If you've ever seen the Northern lights you know how bright and simply wonderful and awe-inspiring that they can be.

Well, the magnetic field is based at the poles. Rudolf is obviously specially magnetically charged. Santa MUST have a method for inducing such a charge because we also know that the only way his sleigh could fly so fast would be some form of levitation along the lines of the earth's magnetic field.

I suppose that as long as there is a Santa there will always be reindeer who want to 'take the treatment' and guide the sleigh.

Alternatively, Santa could always drink a bit too much spiked eggnog. That seems to light up some people's noses pretty well.

Burn out? It's not a light bulb. Rudolph is living organism, so his nose glows naturally, like a firefly or those fish that live in the darkness of the ocean. It will never go out.

Now if only we had technology like that.

He feeds Rudolph some bean burritos, lights a match, and makes him fly backwards. J/K

All the deer get caps with headlamps on them now.
