Let's be realistic the only thing that truly controls the Presidents rating is how the media spins things. All you hear is neg . it's low
something pos. it's up-but the media has been so neg about the war his ratings are down .The economy is doing well but you don't hear much about it cause they don't get good ratings out of pos. things.

Very easy. It all depends on what the Federal Reserve Chairman has to say. The President of the United States appoints the Federal Reserve Chairman with the approval of the Senate. If the President appoints a Conservative, most likely the market will struggle. If the President appoints a Liberal, well, we never see that happening. That's why Allan Greenspan was the longest serving Chair for the Federal Reserve. Every time Greenspan would open his mouth, the market usually took a drop (maybe 2% - 5%). That's way President George "How did that happen" Bush had to name Paul Behneke as the new Chair. Behneke is a mainstream person; believes in the fact that everyone should make a decent return on stocks, bonds, annuities, and saving and checking accounts. The President's approval rating is already in the crapper, so he needed to do something to help pull his rating up. So, hand in hand, the ecomony does affect presidential approval ratings.

Lots of people are under the mistaken impression that "the economy" is under virtually the direct control of "the government." And so when the economy is doing well, these people, who hold this view, assume that the President must be doing something -- everything -- right and that when the economy is doing poorly, then the Prez must be doing something wrong.
The truth is that the government can influence the economy's performance in some ways, but our economy is still primarily a free market and most decisions that will effect the flow of money are not under the control of the government. So the economy's performance is not exclusively the responsibility of the government.
