I had my son at 5:45 am on sunday morning, and went home at 1:00 pm on monday. I also hemorraged 1000cc's of blood when my placenta came free, and had a fever for 6 hrs. That being said, usually as long as you've had at least one bowel movement (and they load you with stool softeners), your perineum and vaginal wall aren't too badly damaged, and you feel good, you can go home whenever you want.

In the US, women stay in the hospital for 48 hours after a vaginal birth if there are no complications. For an ultrasound, it can be 72-96 hours...depending on how well it goes. They normally just make sure everything is fine with you and the baby and let you go after 48 hours.
One thing to think about. If your baby is jaundice, then he/she may have to stay longer...if the score is too high. It can get dangerous after a higher score, but most are good to go with you. My daughter almost had to stay for an extra 24 hours to stay under a light...the nurses said that I would be able to leave her and go home or I could pay an extra $50 (insurance does NOT cover it) and stay an extra night with her. Obviously I would've stayed an extra night so that could lead to an extra night for you, but you were talking about a healthy birth. Just remember, anything can happen during labor...not bad, but sometimes if the baby wont' come out, it can result in a c-section...and although that's healthy, it will result in a longer stay!
Good luck and enjoy it!!!

all hospitals seem to be different i stayed 3 days with my first and with my second I gave birth at 5:55am on the Monday and left the hospital at 9am the same Monday Only 3 hours after the birth, as my son had done his first wee and poo. With my third I stayed 2 days went home only to be put back in hospital with an infection(retained placenta). I think that if you can you should stay at least 3 days.

I recently had a baby and it was a very healthy quick labour and i stayed n hospital for 3 days. You will proberly want to go home sooner but remember you might get what they call the 3 day blues which is when you just start crying for no reason at all!

2 days if nothing is wrong with the baby or you most of the time you might stay 3 if at most if you or baby dont feel good thats it then you go home and everyone comes to visit and all you want to do is rest and look at the baby and take it all in then you wish you were still at the hospital so you can rest funny how these things work

If the birth is healthy and you turn out just fine you will usually stay in the hospital 24 to 48 hours. They just make sure that all of your vital signs stay in a healthy condition and that your uterus shirnks back down!

if the baby is born vaginally, i believe most hospitals its a minimum 24 hours, some are 48 hours. For c-section, i believe the minimum is 3 days. Don't quote that, but ask your DR. at your next appt! They will tell ya exactly what the hospital you deliver at has for its policies. Good luck!

My hospital I delivered my daughter at had a 48 hour policy when it came to the baby. They said I could sign myself out at any time I wanted, but I would go home without my daughter. She was not legally allowed to be released until she was 48 hours old. It was that way with every baby who was born at that hospital.
