No, Mercon V and Mercon/Dexron III are not the same. Mercon V is a synthetic blend used in 1997 and newer Ford transmissions. Mercon/Dexron III is certified by GM for vehicles requiring Dexron fluid and for Ford vehicles from 1983 to 1996 calling for a Mercon fluid. Check your owner's manual, or check with your dealer for the recommended ATF for your vehicle. Using the wrong fluid can damage your transmission.

No they are not...Most newer Fords use Mercon v.. with the exception of the Escape, Mariner, and sister Mazda Tribute that still use the old CD4E auto trannie..that still uses Mercon/Dextron..be sure you use the correct fluid or it may drive the puter nuts.

A very simple answer is this: MERCON V is the newest and supercedes all the others. It can be used in place of the MERCON/ dextron 3.

no they arn't, they have different properties, DO NOT MIX THEM, or put them in the wrong transmisson. it will cause the transmission to slip, and it will in the long run damage the transmission.
