To be a sign of something that will happen in the future.

Example : The storms and rains of that year foreshadowed a long period of unstable weather conditions. The recent outbreak of violence was foreshadowed by isolated incidents in the city earlier this year.

A great example of foreshadowing is Where the Red Fern Grows (read it in 4th grade, really sad). Foreshadowing is mostly used in first person books, and means that the author is when the author is in one particular moment of the book, but makes a hint or reference to a future section.

Something (often in a movie or book) that hints at something that will happen later. It might be similar to the future event. For example, if in a book the author seems to make a big deal about a mouse drowning, another character might drown similarly later in the book. ... does that make any sense?
