I love that song, and have the version by The Clash, but my dad is convinced someone did it before them. Who was it?

He's right. "I fought the law" was originally recorded by The Crickets in 1961, and later covered by The Bobby Fuller Four in 1966, before being covered by The Clash in 1988.

It was written by Sonny Curtis and meant to be sung by Buddy Holly. When Holly was killed in a plane crash, Curtis joined the rest of The Crickets and recorded it with them.
