One way to get called for focus groups is to sign up for free subscriptions to trade publications. Marketing agencies use those subscription lists to compile focus groups for specific industries. To be eligible for the subscriptions, you need to complete a questionnaire describing your job responsibilities (title, purchasing responsibilities, etc.) So if you are in IT field, for example, sign up for as many trade pubs as you can.
There are usually dozens of titles for just about every industry. Here's a link to the Yahoo directory for lists of trade publications: http://dir.yahoo.com/Business_and_Economy/Business_to_Business/News_and_Media/Magazines/Trade_Magazines/

I used to belong to a focus group a few years ago, when I lived in Philly. It was called Philadelphia Focus. They would call me like every other month or so for a focus group,it was pretty cool sitting there giving my opinion on certain things, drinking coffee and they always fed us lunch or dinner, depending on what time the group was held, and I was getting paid for it too! It was usually 1.5-2 hours and I got paid about $80.00 each time and free parking. Try typing in "focus groups" and see what happens!
