I'll give you some brief facts.

Franklin was born to Josiah and Abiah Folger Franklin (yes, some of her relatives went on to found the Folger coffee fortune), in Boston MA. His father was a tradesman who dealt in soap and candles.

His parents had a very large family, and Ben's formal education was somewhat sketchy. Of course, he was able to read and write, and had a turn of mind that led him to educate himself through independent study.

He was apprenticed to his brother James, a printer, and ran away at the age of 17, ending up in Philadelphia PA. He soon found work and eventually set up his own business as a printer.

He entered into a common-law marriage with Deborah Read, a woman whose husband had gone to sea and never returned. There were two children born of this marriage, a boy named Benjamin (who died very young) and a daughter named Sally. Franklin's illegitimate son, William, was also a part of the household.

Franklin busied himself with civic and intelllectual affairs in his adopted city and spent a number of years in England. He was known in scientific circles and was probably the best known colonist in the mother country. He returned to Pennsylvania and was again prominent in public affairs during the French and Indian War.

Franklin supported the cause of independence, and also served as one of the American ministers to France, where he was instrumental in securing French support for the Revolution.

After peace was declared, Franklin continued to be active in the affairs of the young nation, particularly the Constitutional Convention. In his eighties when he died (remember, the average life expectancy for a man in the eighteenth century was still only about 45!), it's reported that well over one thousand people attended his funeral.

I like the idea of naming him Benjamin after a role model. And it is such a handsome name! However, in my personal opinion, Benjamin Franklin might be a bit too over the top. I like Benjamin Thomas. That way, you honor two great people and the reference to them isn't as noticeable. And Benjamin Thomas is a great combo! BQ: Yes, it does! All your children have gorgeous names by the way! BQ2: That is a gorgeous name! However, if it matters, Scarlett rhymes with Charlotte, which is already a middle name. And the middle name has Rose in it. And Scarlett and Rose are both reddish colors. And you have a Violet already as well. However, if these small things don't matter to you, I would totally go with Scarlett Rosalie!! (:
