I think they come from within us.

It comes from an area of the brain called the Amygdala...it's a very complicated system comprised of many components which are chemically and electronically charged.

It is a unique trait among humans and would take several semesters of school to explain.

Yet it is sooooo much more than human mechanics. Good emotions help support the immune system, while negative emotions degrade it. Stay happy if you can...it's good for your health.

You mean, why do we have emotions like God? We were created in his image, so it makes sense that we would have certain traits. However, I don't think you can describe God's emotions as "misunderstood, pouty, teenage girl emotions". That's an oversimplification and doesn't have any information backing up the statement.

It all depends on your approach. Most religious texts would say that human-kind was created deliberately (whether by design or in a deities image) to have emotions. It is a fundamental aspet of creationism.

DNAists will tell you that everything comes down to DNA. The building blocks of intelligent life in all its variations.

Psychologists will take the approach of cultural influences and character make-up.

A school of thought that I personally like is that Emotions are a basic form of commincation that is virtually universal across the animal kingdom. As newborns, all creatures use a form of emotionally based responces to internal and external stimuli for such things as "Feed Me", "I want company", "I'm tired" and "I feel pain."

Communication specialists have their wonderful mantra, 10% of communication is verbal. The rest is body language and emotive content. Emotions allows us the ability to communicate things that are either difficult to express in other ways and form basic survival communication. With higher cognitive abilities, emotions take on more complex messages involving conceptual icons such as Love, Hate, Fear, Loathing, Joy, Sadness, etc.

In the most basic of creatures, emotional responses are your basic Fight or Flight type reactionary modes. As you go up the chain in terms of intelligence, you see Companionship, Family, Motherhood, and so forth.

The baby has emotions to protect itself. The mother has emotions to protect itself and her child. The father has emotions to protect the family. Very crude definition I know but I am trying to stress the BASIC qualities only.

Today, many might think Emotions are now redundant, generally speaking, as we do not live as we once did. However, they still play a strong part in how our bodies communicate to ourselves as well as with each other. They have developed along with humans and the greater population of life, but they are in essence our bodies trying to communicate.

My thoughts and mine alone.

Emotions come from your brain and may be triggered by various hormones in your blood. People usually associate hormones with sexuality but they are a primitave signaling system used from everything from inducing hunger to controling your blood sugar. When you are in danger, a behavioral response is triggered called "fight or flight". It is accompanied by increases in adrenaline, fast pulse, and hyper alertness. Your body is preparing to either fight or get out of Dodge. This response doesn't always work too well for many modern situations.

I don't know why we have more advanced emotions like love. Maybe this is part of our spirit or soul.
