usually the more colourful fish are males and the less flirty or less colourful ones are female. My bf has one and his is a male that has incredible flowing fins with a bright red colour.

While fins, and color is good sign. Males from Thai fighting breeds are fairly short fined. With the right food, and water conitions dull colored females can get quite colorful. Sexing bettas is more of an art. The best way I've found is looking for the egg spot, or ovipositor, but note that males can have one as well. See link for details.

PS- Note that females fight too. A new betta may result in some nasty fighting. Generally you need at least 10 gallons and 3 betta. Personally I go with 1 female per 5 gallons. Males and female cann't be kept together long term.

Female betta's are fairly drab in color and typically have very short fins in comparison to males.

Males are usually very brightly colored and have long flowing fins.
