It's supposed to intice children's imagination, however it really is for the benefit of the parents. So they can relive their childhood memories.
The santa story really is a lie which the kids eventually find out around the age of 7 or 8.

There is a whole bunch of mythology going back quite far that encompasses the spirit of christmas, and St. Nick. He is a secular way of encompassing the christmas myth, and is therefore soemthing many sects can enjoy as part of the Christmas spirit. St. Nick himself works well for this, and if he has become a commerical being it is more due to our society as a whole, and is not a reflection upon the myth of St. Nicholas or his sources.

St. Nicholas himself was a real person, but so much has beenlost in the transition to what we call Santa Claus,a dn many pagan traditions have been mixed in, so that there is little the same between the original Saint and fat man that comes down the chimney.

"The true story of Santa Claus begins with Nicholas, who was born during the third century in the village of Patara. At the time the area was Greek and is now on the southern coast of Turkey. His wealthy parents, who raised him to be a devout Christian, died in an epidemic while Nicholas was still young. Obeying Jesus' words to "sell what you own and give the money to the poor," Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God and was made Bishop of Myra while still a young man. Bishop Nicholas became known throughout the land for his generosity to the those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships."

So there you go. Santa is derived from a true person.
