All of it is used, but not all the time. The brain is always active, but some section are not as active as other depending on the condition. If you are in the dark, then evidently, your visual cortex is not being used a lot at that point.
The old myth that we only use 10% of the brain is probably due to the missunderstanding (of people not PROPERLY using their brain, perhaps) who were told that we only understood how 10% of the brain worked -- leaving another 90% that we have not figured out yet. It is working, but we do not know how.

Since just about all areas of the brain "light up" during mapping, the 10% is way off on usage.

people who say 10% are wrong people use all of there brain different parts are responsible for different functions whether actively or inactive, you cant just chop a part of the brain out and function completely the same as before it was gone

Many have accepted that they have used only 10% of their brain to answer this question.

But I am using my brain 100% to answer this question.

Let me wait and see how much you are using to choose the best answer.

We use all of it. The idea that we only use 10% of our brain is a myth.

We do use all of it but not all at once, most research indicates we only use 20% of it most of the time, it depends on what we're doing, parts of the brain are for processing the stimulations from our senses, parts are for recalling memories, parts are for creativity, parts are for the motor neurone abilities etc....
The point is there wont be many instances when we use all of them processes at once.
