Can BLU-RAY movies be played on DVD players?

My dvd player is from SONY and holds 5 discs. It plays CD-RW/CD-R.

Unfortunately, no. Sony wouldn't be able to get away with Blu-Ray players at $1000 if they were. But hey, at least Blu-Ray players double as upconverting DVD players if you're looking to kill two birds.

No but you can play DVD's on a blu-ray player
