There is an expander clip on the end of the shaft. It sometimes takes extra effort to remove. A little prying is OK if careful of surrounding parts.Rotate shaft a little each time you try eventually it will pop out. I had a few take some time but it does come out. There is a special puller $$$$$ too.

I'm not a mechanic but it sounds at sometime you had a leak in the housing and it's now dry. You might have to take out the housing and buy a new housing. I wouldn't remove the axle by force, you might do something to it. I'm sure there is a mechanic around who knows for sure.

dont try forcing on them, you could break something.its probably got c-locks and they need to be removed, before the axle can come out.
