(1) "D" is the correct answer. The subordinate clause "since she knew what the lecture was about" turns into a noun phrase "Knowing [= present participle] what the lecture was about".
(2) These two ideas are definitely linked together:
(A) there´s no connective before "The worst time";
(B) one sentence contradicts the other ("best" as opposed to "worst");
(C) "the worst [time I had all summer]": the correct answer
(D) these two sentences do have a connection [cf. (A)].

1. A clause from sentence (1) has been turned into a participial phrase in sentence (2). ("Knowing" describes "she.")

So, I guess the best answer is D.

2. I think the answer is C, since "the best" and "the worst" are opposites. Not sure.
