You can open one christmas present on x-mas eve, or all your presents on x-mas eve and save a big one for x-mas day. What we do is we make our own angel every year for the top of the x-mas tree, it is really fun and the kids enjoy it. You can christmas carol on christmas eve night.

Try reading a short Christmas story every year, it can be the same one every year or a different one. Maybe you can take turns reading a paragraph or one person can read the whole story. One of my favorites is "The Gift of the Magi". If your kids are really young, "The Night Before Christmas" is a good choice. I always liked the writings from "The Spirit of Christmas" by Henry Van Dyke.
You can probably find these on the internet, or Norman Rockwell's Christmas Book has a lot of good short stories and poems in it that really touch upon the meaning of Christmas. You can even add to the tradition by serving waissil while you do this.

Well, for Christmas Eve, instead of just leaving cookies and milk for Santa, make some Reindeer food too and throw it out on your yard for Santa's Reindeer. All it is, is oatmeal of any kind, sprinkles like you would use to decorate cookies or some glitter. Mix all these together in a ziploc bag and shake then put it out ony your lawn! Yep the birds will probably eat it but its fun for the kids to do.
Maybe let everyone pick out one gift to open up on Christmas Eve instead of all on Christmas Day. Also, I know on most news channels or local tv stations, they have the Santa tracking that shows where Santa is in the world and the estimated time that he will arrive at your city. Watch this with the kids and if you have a world or US map, show them where he is at that time if they don't show it on tv. Kids usually get a kick out of this stuff, atleast I did when I was a kid.
Christmas Day, besides opening up your gifts, sing along to some Christmas songs. Usually radio stations play them all day long or you can stick in your favorite Christmas CD's in and sing along.

When my parents were alive, I was always allowed to open a gift on christmas eve and then I would pass out the presents on christmas morning and we would take turns opening them but there were rules: 1. select a gift and tell who it was from, 2. open the gift and show it to everybody else then the next person did the same thing. that way we all knew who gave what gift.

We do a custom that my husbands grandparents used to do in germany. When St. Nick leasves the presents under the tree he also hids a glass pickle and the person who finds the pickle either gets a special gift or gets to name what board game we will play during family time.

well, on christmas eve we go to my aunts house, hang around until dinner, eat, open presents, hang around until 10, then we go to church. Then, on christmas day, we go to my grandmas house, open presents, then hang around (and have appetizers)
