The time is gone now when there used to be different names for boys and girls and it was easy to find just by the name weather the person is a boy or girl. The names of girls mostly came from the names of godesses or rivers and those of the boys from the Gods or reknowned gurus. But today both sexes can have common names and it is difficult to differentiate between the two sexes.

It depends on the location and time. For some time names were selected from those of Gods / God-es. For quite some time the names of the Film Stars ruled the selection of names. For certain classes, they still select the names from the names of their elders ~ grand parents / great grand parents etc., It is highly difficult to select any few names which are very common in India. However, the above criteria gives the broad basis for the point under reference.
