I am a beginner knitter, and my biceps, forearms and chest muscles are so sore! They are so achy that it hurts to even type this question. I only knitted for 1 hour or so. Am I doing something wrong or do I just have to get used to the motions?

It may be that you are tense from wanting to do every thing right. Try to relax and don't "grip" the needles, just kinda let them "float" in your hands or hold them a little looser. That might help. A lot of people hold the needles too tight when they first learn.

Well any new activity can make your muscles ache a bit but it does sound like you are in a lot of discomfort from only an hour. It could be that you are a bit too tense. Make sure you are sitting in a comfortable position and not holding your body too ridgid. I find it helpful to change my sitting position from time to time if I'm knitting for long periods of time. I think though relaxation could be the key in your case. Remember, it's just a hobby, it's not life and death, even if you make a complete mess of it the beauty with knitting (unlike most other hobbies) is you can just unravel it an begin again.

Good luck

It really depends on your mussles. I have been nitting for quite a while and every once and a while I still get sore muscles but not as bad as you described. Though I think that when I first started nitting it hurt just as bad you might want to take an advil and when you do start nitting again go slower and dont make the knots so tight it can help alot. I know from experience. :-)

Try not to grip the needles to hard. I have had this problem also, and it's usually when I'm in a hurry to finish something that I start holding the needles to tight and my arms and chest start to hurt. Loosen up, stop knitting for a while, have a cup of tea and then start again.

You probably just have to get used to it. It's kind of like riding a bike at speed 7 for 1 hour when you haven't for the last year. If it keeps happening after a week of doing this, there's a chance you're doing something wrong.

When I started knitting I would get sore all over too. Don't worry, with practice your pains will go away!

like any new activity for your body, you are likely using muscles that you haven't used in a long time. It will take a bit, but eventuallyyou will get used to it.
