coloured mini marshmellows and tooth picks would work. you can even use a certain colour marshmellow for each type of nucleic acid.

I have seen a really cool bead project that is geared for teaching DNA structure

http://www.ology.amnh.org/genetics/stufftodo/bracelet_do.html
is good for younger kids

http://www.fresno.k12.ca.us/schools/S090/_atkinsgatebio/beadproject/GenJewel
This is a good site, but sometimes their server goes down. It has very explicit instructions on how to make aDNA model out of beads and then turn them into earrings. A Bio teacher wrote this.

Another thought would be to use those magnetix toys - sticks and round magnets are the main pieces of this kind of toy. If you have it around or a friend who will let you use theirs.

Hope some of this helps

You can do it on a hard paper, have a paper cut it in pieces (hexagonal may be) write about base pairs sugar phosphate backbone on each piece and join these pieces 3' to 5' there will be a chain of these molecules you can insert it in a hard (about 3 mm thick) wire which is having a bottom support. Also you can show bonding on this two anti parallel strands of DNA.

Marshmallows and toothpicks are always a good idea, but if you want to get really creative, use bread rolls, or bottle caps, or popsicle sticks...
The possibilities are endless.

You could use toothpicks and different colored gum drops. The different colors will represent the different DNA.

Marshmallows and toothpicks and, if you get really creative, licorice.
