Only Visa or Master Card and little Euros maybe 100 or less for first expences is needed. Traveller's cheques are obsolete and expensive. Almost every other street corner has ATM where you can get exactly the amount of Euros you need much cheaper than cashing checks.

The debit card is handy for getting cash from an ATM. Since you will probably be charged a service charge for each transaction, be sure to take out as much as you can to minimize the transaction fees.

You can get your cheques back even if stolen. Make sure you understand the small print, and watch your pockets in Paris especially on the underground.
