I have a feeling that this is something really obvious like scented oils that set the mood? but in a song it says
"Burning both ends of the midnight oil"
and the both ends part kinda throws me off.

Midnight oil came from when people used to have to burn oil to see by. By burning both ends of the midnight oil could never happen in real life but is a expression that they had to do some major burning of oil (burning both ends of the candle, I think they just changed this to be unique) Staying up late, waring themselves out. Back then most peeps were farmers getting up with the sun.
I do not know the song you are referring to but this is how I would and do take this saying...

it's a mixed metephore for
"Burning you candel at both ends "
and
"burning the midnight oil"

Thus it means Working it all night and times running out.
