There were thirteen states from the time they designated themselves "states."
If you are looking for the first five *colonies* that's a different question:
Virginia was first in 1609, defined as the area between 39th and 34th parallel and stretching "from sea to sea" (for a time Virginia even included Bermuda). New England was second in 1624 and was defined as everything above the 39th. Massachusetts was created as a separate colony within New England in 1628. Maryland was carved out of Virginia in 1632. Rhode Island and Connecticut established separate govenments in 1636. That makes five.
You may be confused with the five *regions* that historians divide the North American colonies into:
New England, the Middle Colonies, Cheasapeake Bay, the Lower South and the Frontier.

Technically, based on order of ratification, the first five states were Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, and Connecticut.
The remaining eight in order were Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina and Rhode Island.
