The term "holiday season" actually originated as a derivation of the words "holy day". Holidays are days set aside for a religious observance, commemoration of an important event in a culture's history, or to honor an individual who was noteworthy or of importance to the particular culture.

Many people tend to use the term "holiday season" to refer to Christmas, and now Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, in the United States simply because these overlapping holidays are observed by a majority of people in the region and the terminology has been associated with those observances through common use.

One thing It is also important to note about these overlapping observances is that those who observe them also recognize that each of the other cultures has its right to observe its own holiday. This has come to pass over time, and with the adoption of tolerance for all religious observances, in recent history.

It would fall to reason that a common recognition of any cultural or religious holiday should take place provided that recognition remains reciprocal in nature. Thus would the observances of all religions, including Islam, join in to a common holiday season in thought. Governments and religious leaders cannot force this into place, but I'm sure this will come to pass, in time.

i think it also refers to ramadan and all the other holidays that fall around the same time. its just that people don't always know what "holidays" refers to, we each only think of the ones that we celebrate, like i celebrate christmas.
