Hannibal Hamlin of Maine was Lincoln's VP from 1861-65. He apparantly displeased Lincoln by supporting the generalship of Joseph Hooker, who did not do well as a military leader. It is also believed that Hamlin was more interested in a harsh treatment of the south and was more pro-rights for freed slaves than Lincoln was, although there is no proof of this.
What is known is that Lincoln, seeking to send a message of reconciliation to the South, chose a Southern Democrat as his running mate, and thus chose Andrew Johnson, who then became president after the assassination of Lincoln in April 1865.
