Understand first of all that in the modern fairytale Santa does not employ historically accurate elves. Rather, they are most like the descriptions of dwarves or gnomes found in German/Scandinavian folklore. The true historical elves are found in the ancient Norse mythologies, and do not hail from this plane of existence at all. They come from Alfheim, and are divided into the Alfar, and Liosofar, or Light and Dark Elves respectively. This may also be the conceptual beginning of the Seelie and Unseelie court affiliations that lasted well into the reign of the Irish Tuatha DeDanaan. But according to the original Norse sources, elves were tall, slim, graceful beings with delicate features and pointed ears, obviously the base inspiration for the elves of Tolkiens world far more so than any other denizen of Faerie that has been mistakenly lumped together under the modernly generic term, "Elf" - as opposed to the noble meaning it once had.
