Floor joists are such as they support the floor.
If these wood elements were supporting the ceiling they would be called ceiling joists.
If supporting the roof they would be called rafters.
Supporting the walls >> joists.
However, floor joists differ somewhat as they are usually of larger dimension as they must support you and I walking on them.
Commonly they are 2 x 8's or 2 x 10's
