My own nails won't grow well, and they are hard to keep up with. The lady who cuts my hair does them for me (gel nails) and she does them clear, and on the short side, nice for work.
I think you should get them from a clean place you trust, don't get them scary long, and keep them short and natural looking, you'll be fine.

Some people seemed disgusted? Why?

I miss my fake nails. I have horrible natural nails too.. brittle, won't grow... I have to keep them short or they peel, etc.

Get natural-looking ones, I always go for the gel french tip ones. Sometimes I get the cute nail designs.

I don't see how those would gross people out, honestly. As long as you don't have them scary-long and keep them clean (which isn't hard to do) then you should be fine.

The only thing stopping me from getting them again is the cost.. fills every few weeks ugh!

DO NOT USE FAKE NAILS!!! They are the WORST factor you might do to your nails. Instead, paint them each and every week, one chew with nail polish on, and you can NEVER do it once more. I had the EXACT identical obstacle, and my nails have been VERY vulnerable. I paint them with OPI nail envy, OPI nail laquer, and OPI best coat. THAT is the great factor you'll purchase, and the great factor you'll do for yourr nails at this factor. Plastic nail corporations could such as you to consider that false nails 'beef up' and 'safeguard' nails, however oh are they flawed. Fake nails become worse your nails from the within out, and are TERRIBLE for you.

I had fake nails once. I accidently hit one of them on the side of a table and it ripped off my real nail underneath. I had to go to the doctors to get my real nail taken off and bandaged and I had to get pain meds too because the pain was absolutly horrible! My real nail hasnt been the same since. I don't recommend fake nails at all. On top of the risk of injury....i figured out they would cost $650 a year to keep up!

Drug store faux nails can look thick and cheap so you have to be careful. Professional nails last much longer. Make sure you go to a reputable place and be careful of developing nail fungus! It happens more than you think.

If you get them get the gel nails. They are easier on you real nails, are thinner, and look more natural.

If you like them, go for it. It shouldn't matter what other people think. If you want them to look more natural, get them shorter, and squared.

NO! You will get nail fungus, it's horrible and very hard (and expensive) to get rid of.......it's just not worth it!
