because teenagers are common, so pop is common.

Pop is the category of music that is defined by whatever teens and pre-teens are into at any give time and what is pushed at them. Rap is a part of that kids are told if they don't like it they are not cool. It is the latest but definitely not the greatest. For most of them their personal taste has not had the time and experience to surface .Given time and the ability to look past their peer group tastes ,yeah... they move into other genres. In pop's defense I am glad 10 -13 year olds prefer pop to music about death and anarchy

Pop is pretty much a general genre. It takes a song that's not too much rock, but not too soft to be blues or something, and it puts it into the pop genre. People describe Alanis Morissette as pop, when actually some of her music is just one guitar and her voice, or it's a really rocking song. You'll rarely find an artist that is just pure pop, though. It might be in the pop/rock/alternative genre, and that's how the band or artist will describe their music style.

Well, some people listen to multiple genres. Take me for example, I listen to everything from classical to rap. I like pop, though, because the lyrics make a lot of sense and I can relate to them. Many people are so focused on the music itself that they don't pay attention to what the song is actually saying, let alone what it means.

Pop is popular because it's called pop nd pop is short for popular.
Sorry, couldnt' resist the pun.
But seriously, I think pop is popular because becuase of the marketing. If you notice, all the pop singers look like models. And that's what they sell, a look; not a sound.
And a lot of people are dumb enough to buy music because of the look (and they like that stupid look, too).

Tough question. Depends on how you see pop. I cannot hold a band accountable for having universal appeal, but i can hold them accountable (as being pop) if they are generic, unoriginal, and safe.
example of good band people call pop for stupid reasons: System of a Down
example of a good band people call pop for good reasons: Fall Out Boy
just listen to these two bands, and youll see the difference between good/not pop but with mass appeal and good/pop with mass appeal. System of a Down is different in every sense of the word, and Fall Out Boy is generic in every sense of the word. Just my opinion.

Pop can be moderately tolerated by a wide variety of individuals, which increases its "like-ability".
