In the classic AIM 5.9, the little windows pop up in the lower right hand corner telling you when people sign on.off, go/return away, and go/return idle. I just got a mac, and i downloaded the AIM for Macs, but it doesnt alert me anything. I found out how to have it alert me when people sign on or off, but there's nothing about going or returning from away. Plus, I don't even know how to set my own away message. Basically, I need a complete tutorial on how to work this, because it's completely different form what I'm used to. If you're willing to put in the time to help me out, I would really appreciate it. Thank you

Try using iChat (normally it comes with macs, or you could download it), it tells when people are on or off, you can set away messages easily, and i think there's a setting to let you know when people aren't away.

I use a program called Adium (http://www.adiumx.com/) for my IMing, which is compatible with oodles of IM protocols, including AIM. It's also very customizable. In conjunction with that, for notification, I use Growl (http://growl.info/), basically a notification "framework" that works with all kinds of Mac apps. Adium has a pretty good list of events for Growl notification, from logins to status changes to file transfers and so on.

It would mean using a different program than the "official" AIM client, of course, but Adium has been very good to me and I recommend it. There's not a huge learning curve. :) And without Growl installed I almost feel like something's missing from my Mac, haha.
