most pills are effective after 7 days of taking them.so you only need backup protection for that 7 days. others recommend 1 month with back up method. read the insert that came with your pill, all you need to know when taking them is written there. you can read there when will it be effective. or ask your doctor about it. different pill brands have different formulations, so every one is different.
