Some causes would be that maybe someone close to you, or someone you really love, has hurt you emotionally and you have your guard up in order to never feel pain like that again. You may have been abused sexually (such as a rape or molestation) and are scared to get close to anyone. Maybe you never were shown any intimacy as a child growing up and thus do not know how to show it yourself.

In my experience, most mental health issues are due to childhood trauma, especially physical, sexual, mental and/or emotional abuse.
