It runs windows XP, came with 1GB RAM (not sure what type) It has an Sis motherboard on it. Does anyone at least know when motherboards started supporting the SATA format, and is it common, or found on more high-end systems?

If you dont find a sata controller on your motherboard you can also get a seperate SATA controller card. The controller card will run you a tiny bit extra but let you buy a newer harddrive so you are ready to go whenever you purchase your next motherboard or computer and want to migrate the drive. Ive linked a drive controller below for reference. I have no experience with that specific controller but Ive done plenty of business with that site and had only good experiences.

Around 2003. SATA is getting more common now, well it's definitely common if you handbuild your computer. If you want SATA support, you might be able to get by with a SATA controller for your motherboard.

As long as your mobo has SATA ports or you use a SATA controller card.

Just remember, when installing Windows you have to load the SATA drivers when it prompts you to (near the beginning) by hitting the F6 key.

It should work. check with the manufacturer first to see if its compatable with your certain model. SATA has been around since 2001 (I think), but it depends if the model supports it.

Look for these in your motherboard

The 4 orange ones...
