A thesis is a proposition that is advanced or maintained by argument, or an essay that puts forth an original point of view that is a result of research that is required for a degree.

So the thesis would be a statement. If you wrote an essay, then it should have come to some sort of conclusion, some point that was made. If you just stated what BSE is, how it affects products, and how to treat and prevent it, then you did not write a thesis, since there is no proposition.

"The dangers of BSE require that the meat industry adopt stricter procedures in processing meat." That is a proposition, and the essay should explain why this is true. But that would require showing what the meat industry does that is not good, and showing what it has to do to make things better....

In today's society people are constantly monitoring what they eat for fear of becomming sick. Due to various products animals are given to feed on or poor environments meat can be tainted and cause illness in humans as well as the animal itself. Bovine spongiform encephalopathy or BSE is a disease that effects cows as well as meat products that are eaten everyday. BSE is a serious disease that affects many cattle and meat products that needs to be treated and prevented before it becomes an epidemic.

I can't just give you the perfect example since the thesis statement has to be connected with your previous sentences. So, here is a suggestion while you think of the transition statement: I will further expound on the definition of mad cow disease, its effect of dairy and meat products and last but not the least, the available treatment and avenues of prevention of the disease.

Generally, it's easier to come up with a thesis statement before you write a paper. But it sounds like you should use something like "The adverse effects of mad cow disease on food products can be avoided in a number of ways..."

Something along those lines. Just make sure it is a statement that sounds like something that someone else could argue against. Then you know you've got a decent thesis statement.

Good luck!
