Avoid stretching your hams by standing and bending over. This can cause extreme stress to the lower back. Also don't put your leg on a surface that is higher than your hips. This puts to much stress on the hams. Try lying down on your back and bring your leg up to a 90 degrees while using both hands to bring the leg back towards your head, go until you feel discomfort. Do both legs. Go 3 times for 15-30 sec.

Stretch as well as you can, and try running every-other day for a while. Warm up before each workout, then stretch after every workout and before bed at night. Choose a different exercise on the days you're not running (like weight lifting). Also consider trying a yoga class or doing some yoga videos at home before bed. Even if you can't get all the way into all the poses right away- that kind of focus and discipline on stretching, for an extended period of time regularly, will really increase your flexibility.

Do a heavy quad workout, then immediately try to gently stretch your hammies. It's called reciprocal inhibition: Agonist muscle use (in this case, working the quads) causes the antagonist muscles (the hammies) to relax.

Thing is, tho, it might not be the muscle. You never said if you injured the back of your thigh, but it could be a connective tissue thing. I would recommend a physical or massage therapist specializing in myofascial release.

Good luck!

Do your stretching after a hot bath or shower.

Stretch slowly, gently, for 10-15 seconds. Do not bounce.

Slow and steady wins the race. It'll take weeks to get noticable improvement.
