Lack of coherent positions on major issues hurts them the most. Summarized best by Kerry's famous "I was for the war before I was against it". The voters see through it, too. Other than being against whatever Bush does, they don't seem to take clear positions on much of anything.

Republicans win the next election with conservative social issues i.e. pro-life, pro-gun, pro-family (no gay-M ect.) values and more importantly closed boarders. If not they lose again.
However the Dems have many advantages even if it is true that they have losing issues. (For the most part they do.)
Social issues are big losers at the moment so Dem's should not touch them.
Immigration (being for illegal is a bad position at the moment) What the Dems should do is to jump on the band wagon for closed boarders(which is a defense issue as well as cultural) and spin it in such a way as to use the force of the issue to push the republicans into pro-labor positions, such as forcing a minimum wage on all US company's utilizing immigrant labor.
That is to say $5/hour for Mexicans working in us. enforce it and the problem will solve itself. Try the same thing with overseas labor. Americans will run with this and the minority can force the majority to act. This is the kind of leadership that the union should push.

Lack of compromise hurts the democrats and the republicans, most Americans are more moderate both parties all or nothing attitude often achieves nothing.
Everyone needs to talk to each other more. We need to look at the other guys view point for what we can agree upon; and build from there. It may be that we will simply have to agree to disagree on some issues, but we cannot keep painting the other guy with horns and a tail.

No lack of compromise does not hurt the Democrats.
A lack of a spinal cord and balls hurts the Democrats. Their lack of ability to call things what they are hurts the Democrats. Their ridiculous wishes to try to please everyone hurts the Democrats. Their inability to make a point and stick to it and be concise hurts the Democrats.

I don't think they really care. They'll just blame the conservatives like they always do. Never take responsibility, that should be their slogan.
