Can anyone who knows a lot about computers tell me what may be some causes? It is a pentium 4 and I am so annoyed with it that it may take a dive off the back porch.

I repeat for those who did not understand the question. IT is NOT the fan.
Also, it is not in a hot area, the temerature in, around , by , near, close to the computer is cool.

I take it by that you mean that the computer beeps or something then shuts down to protect itself.

A couple things you could try:

1) Is the computer cover on? I know a lot of people think that heat will dissipate faster if the cover's off, but the opposite's actually true. The reason being that with the cover on, the computer casing becomes a sealed tunnel with only a few exit points, meaning that the internal fan will work far more efficiently.

2) Have you overclocked your graphics card? Well stop it.

3) Bring up your task manager to see if any program's taking a disproportionate amount of CPU time. It could be a faulty program or a virus which is making your CPU work harder than it should have to.

4) Add an additional fan to the system. You can get these fairly cheaply and it slots in like a card.

There are several things that throw off a lot of heat in a computer case. The hard drive(s), video cards, power supply, mobo, and CPU are the main culprits. Make sure that there are enough case fans for adequate ventilation. Dust on components increases heat because it acts like insulation. Keep canned air handy and blow out the dust often. Get an after market CPU fan, they are better than the fans provided with the CPU. Zalman makes good CPU fans. After removing the old CPU fan, thoroughly clean all the old thermal grease off of the CPU. Use a BB sized droplet of "Arctic Silver" thermal grease on the CPU before mounting the new heatsink/fan this further reduces heat.

What is the brand of the computer? Is i custom built? did you build it? These would need to be known. The biggest cause for a computer to over heat is the processor fan. Also if you built or had built the computer then you may want to check and see if the grease has been placed between the processor and the heatsink.

Maybe its the heat-sink... if its dirty it will overheat you CPU... also if you accidentally entered the BIOS and changed voltage you can overheat your CPU... and lastly it can also overheat if there is not enough ventilation inside the case and the air is just getting hotter... for the moment I don't remember something else...
