I imagine the word "Tory" came from it's association with the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom who are also known "historically" as Tories.
The term comes from Ireland and it's roots are Gaelic. It is believed the word originates from 'tóraighe' literally meaning "guerrilla fighter".
Over many years the term was redefined to mean "those who are opposed to change" and was thus applied to the political movement that stood for the "status quo" as opposed to the radicals "Whigs" who campaigned for change.
The term "Conservative" was not used until about 1835 and was introduced by Robert Peel in his Tamworth Manifesto, however the political party remained "Tories" for a further 25 years until the term "Conservative Party" was oficially adopted by Disraeli in 1859.

it began to slowly exchange because of the fact the recent Deal, however the pivotal 2d became 1964, after the Civil Rights Act became signed by a Democratic President, and by way of the 'sixty 4 Presidential Elections while Southern Democrats threw their help in the back of Republican Barry Goldwater, who voted against the Civil Rights Act. Richard Nixon extensively utilized his "Southern technique" to scoop up disenfranchised Segregationists interior the South, many being Democrats. interior the technique, Blacks and Liberals interior the Republican occasion and someplace else, began to shift in direction of the Democrats. Southern Conservative Segregationist Democrats have voted Republican ever in view that. right this moment's Republicans = the former day's Segregationists. don't be deceived by Cons right this moment who will revise background and declare that Southern Segregationist Democrats have been "Liberals", and how they remained Democrats till this present day. there's a reason the Southern States went from being Democrat-ruled for some years to being Republican-ruled because of the fact the 1960's. and there's a reason Blacks traditionally voted Republican, and now vote Democrat. The ideology did not exchange interior the south, nor did it between blacks - the only component that replaced became the occasion label.
