Foundation & Empire by Isaac Asimov tells the story, of a civilization that wins wars economically; by having patriotic control over its overseas workers. This could be applicable in the sense that the US controls many international treaties and also the ability to manipulate an entire country's infrastructure simply by changing a couple of prices.

Give up on socialism, scum always rises to the top, no matter what form of government, and socialism puts too much power in too few hands.

If you are set on saving the world, do something about it. Run for congress, or find a good man/woman to back and work to get them elected.
