The names of Santa's reindeer were first mentioned in the poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas", by Clement Clarke Moore, published in the Troy, New York, Sentinel in 1823. There is a little controversy over the authorship, but most acknowledge either Moore or his wife. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Visit_from_St._Nicholas

The reindeer's names are, Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen. There are only eight in the original poem.

Rudolph is a much later addition to the Santa Claus story. Rudolph was created by Robert L. May in 1939 as part of his employment with Montgomery Ward. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudolph_The_Red_Nosed_Reindeer

Rudolph was invented by Montgomery Ward in the 30's as a promotional gimmick.

Santa originally only had one reindeer until Clement Moore wrote "The Night Before Christmas" and added the other reindeer (and named them).

The names of Santa's flying reindeer are: Dasher and Dancer, Comet and Cupid, Prancer and Vixen, Donder (sometimes Donner) and Blitzen.

Rudolph came along much later. He was an invention of Robert May, an employee of Montgomery Ward.
