anyone who's ever heard this song knows it's about a man and a woman.. who are secretly meeting and having an affair while both have responsibilities at "home." Is monogamy truly a natural trait of man, or is it the result of religious brainwashing? Do you think monogamy is an artificial concept set up by our society for structure and convenience? (Marriage and the family unit). If monogamy was so "natural" to man's inherent composition, why do songs like these exist?

I will venture on this one...
Let's just kiss and say goodbye....he is indeed breaking off an affair because of his obligations and her ties to hers. However, this song let's you know that he had feelings for her, otherwise, he would not have kept it going on so long. But somehow, his commitment to his family won out. Commitment to family over a forbidden love...hmmmm.
It all depends on the man and his character...religious or not. I have known men who are not very religious who would NEVER CHEAT because they believe that the woman they are with should be respected no matter what because she is the QUEEN that HE CHOSE! I have known men in the CHURCH who CHEAT right inside the church! So sometimes, religion doesn't do all that it should in the situation.
Monogamy is a concept that is set up by EMOTION not necessarily by society for convenience. People in general are jealous. We don't like to share. Most men believe that a woman that he calls HIS WOMAN should not be touched by another man! Let's be real about that. If another man touches her that is a problem. Women are creatures of habit. They nurture and want to be nurtured. If that is taken care of...they will stay monogomous.
Yes, true love can come out of an affair....married or not. Often affairs include one partner who is not married and that complicates the situation even more. Men can find themselves emotionally caught up with a woman unexpectedly too. Women are always looking for love even when they don't think that they are. Women can go into a relationship thinking that they won't find love and fall head over heels in love....and find that the man is right there with her. Why, because not only has passion taken over and enveloped them both, but they have connected on a level that the spouse couldn't reach. When that relationship lasts a long time, a pseudo-marriage can result.
Maybe that's the reason....Let's just kiss and say goodbye exists. Maybe he found that he was in the midst of a pseudo-marriage...meeting this woman everyday. They both had ties to other families and if they didn't end it soon...two families would be destroyed for the love they shared. He made a hard decision.
Monogamy may or may not be "natural" to every man...but to those that it is "natural" to...even if he finds himself caught in the middle of something...he will inherently, go back, repentantly, and make the most of his marriage. He will make sure that his wife knows that she is the QUEEN that he chose!! And for the love he left behind, he will grieve it and go on.
These songs exist because life has its ups and downs and curves. Nothing is ever simple. If it were, it would be boring.
I would love to say that if it was boringly simple maybe everyone would be happy, but something would mess with that happiness. Don't you think?

This really isn't an answer, more a question. I've been dating a guy, we knew each other in High School. He sends me songs all the time, he speaks through music. He's been divorced 14 years, his ex left him. About 7 months ago we reconnected & started seeing each other long distance. His ex wife passed away right before he contacted me. I have since moved back home, & we've been seeing each other. He is still trying to figure out what happened in his marriage & dealing with heartbreak over her death. He sent me a song by Tom Waits, I hope I Don't Fall In Love With You & then I get this song. Any ideas on this?

Unfair to generalize about men they have to cheat with someone.
People grow apart . Me I could never understand why people marry in their 20's you will not be the same person in a few short years. If you want to play the field remain single though. lots of girls just want the dress, ring and the attention.

Love and marriage are 2 different things but they are usually tied up together. Most people have the misconcept than when a a couple is married, they must be in love but they forgot not all love end up in marriage and not all lmarriage begins with love.
I believe in some society there are culture of arrange marriage, some married due to obligation and some get married because they have to. So in this matter, sometimes when they are married and are dutiful bound, they unexpectedly found someone which we so called their true love or soulmate...Hell, this is where all emotional break loose and they are always in dilemma to choose between responsibility or love!

True love can be created out of married and unmarried people. Don't expect much from an affair but problems because it is wrong.Men that have affair don't respect themselves are their wives or the mistress for that matter their only using them. Let's get real people

I don't think that monogamy is an artificial concept. It can happen and God demands it, but I found out differently and personally. I was in a very disturbing marriage and I had an affair. I also found my soul mate in the process. Sometimes, you may need to do it in order to be "truly" happy. I asked God for forgiveness and now I can live happly ever after. P.S. My x-husband has moved on, is married and they are expecting their first baby. Things turn out for a reason.

I do not think that monogamy is a natural trate. Divorce rates prove this. Neither do I think it is an artificial concept, nor a convenient one. But it is the moral obligation of anyone wanting to preserve the integrity of a marriage and family. If you are married, monogamy is simply having your priorities straight. And yes, I think it is possible for true love to result from an affair, but not likely, as love is not usually what an affair is all about. At least not for both of the people involved. Affairs usually involve someone else getting hurt, not a great foundation for "true love". More like "tainted" love.

I think deep down people want monogomy. I mean no one wants to have the feeling of being jealous that someone could exactly take their place,and they could become second in someone else's heart.
It is human nature to feel jealous of someone. Monogomy is possible,if thats is what the person wants. For some people they can't possibly see themselves just being with one person for the rest of their lives,and in those cases they opt for a different meaning in a relationship.
Songs exist for the reason that,not everyone will think of a relationship in one way. Not one person will be heterosexual,or monogomous.
Society has it's own reasoning for reactions to different situations. In the end all that matters is what works for you.
