Once the pyramidal shaped garbage can was full, it would be incredibly hard to empty from the top- the bottom of the pyramid is large, and the top is small. A cylindrical shaped garbage can is the same size on top and on bottom, so it is simple to empty. What about a garbage can with a small bottom and large top? It wouldn't be able to stand upright! It would topple over.

Because a circle is the strongest shape. If it were a pyramid, you'd see a lot of garbage cans with dented sides and edges.

Most garbage cans aren't shaped like true cylinders, they taper slightly inward as they go toward the bottom to make them easier to empty.
