Well, it varies. I feel it has more to do with accepting that there are bad things in the world as well as good, and not trying sweep them under the rug and pretend they don't exist. That, and perhaps a feeling of separation from people are happy with things as they are, who aren't interested in deep things (for example, people who take popular literature, top-forty music, pop-psychology, fads, and the like seriously), who don't really want to look beyond the veil, so to speak. Most goths have sophisticated and well-rounded (though somewhat dark and dry) senses of humor.
