Time magazine wasn't wrong when in 1974 it chose me as one of America's two hundred "Faces of the Future." I served under every president from Lyndon Johnson to George H. W. Bush. From 1983 to 1987, I was secretary of transportation, and in 1989 and 1990, secretary of labor. In 1991, I became president of the American Red Cross, later taking a leave of absence to help my husband.
