...I promise myself that from now on I will do dishes every night regardless of how few dishes there are, rather than let them build up - and then I always go back to letting them pile up?

I could just say that you're like me and you hate doing dishes.
It's also stating the obvious that you are no stranger to procrastination.

I could suggest that you throw away all dishes except one mug and one plate and then the question becomes somewhat irrelevent.

However, as a counselor I'm fairly familiar with procrastination theory. I hate to tell you that there are LOTS of theories by LOTS of very educated social scientists as to why you might procrastinate. Check some out at this University of Calgary website- http://www.ucalgary.ca/~steel/procrastinus/theory/theory.html.

Of course, if lots of people post possible websites then you may never get around to reading any of them. Don't worry- it's Christmas and you need a break.... right?

www.flylady.com
her main premise is keep your sink shined and your can do anything for fifteen minutes
she helped me!!! (Well her and the new kitchen complete with built in dishwasher that hubby did lol)

And if that does not work think about the vermin that your going to lure in like that, imagine mice and bugs coming in and wandering all over those nasty dishes........
Oh wait not your question.....human nature/procrastinaion and no accountability (got someone you can call for a pat on the back when you do em up?)
Consider throw aways

You need to build on the habit of doing them immediately after yu eat and not letting them pile up. Also, I believe that people are so busy with more important things on their mind, that smaller tasks like this are often put to the side. ( I'm guilty of this myself ) Don't feel like the Lone Ranger.

Well to make it better, if you have a dishwasher, why dont you rinse them and put them in there and then when it is full you have no choice but to start it.
