According to the written legend about vampires. The sun stands for the greater good while the moon was considered to be evil. And the true vampire is not suppose to be able to exist in the sun that was considered to be ultimate good... That is also the reasons that vampires can come out on cloudy days........... Where as other ledgend state that only certain other relics can destroy the vampire. And the cross and holy water was not one of them. For they were creation of the Catholic Church. In order for those to maintain their faith in the power of their church.....

It'll burn them to a crisp. The idea is that the sun represents good and nature and vampires are unnatural and evil so die if exposed to it. If you think about it there's a lot of stupid things vampires do and they end up getting killed. If I was a vampire here's my precautions:
Put heavy drapes to cover the windows. Keep them pulled over all the time.
Make sure I have a clock that adjusts to daylight savings.
Make my coffin fixed to the floor so no one can drag it outside and open during the day.
Get tinted windows for my car.
Wear shoes that I can run in, so if the sun comes up I can run for it.
Keep an apartment somewhere else in town to act as a sanctuary if I can't make it home in time.
Live where there's not much sun.
There's a really good sunlight scene in the film 'Interview with the vampire'. A vampire girl and mother are trapped in a brick shaft and, the sun rises and the beam of light gradually reaches them as they try desperately to move back from it and they scream and burn into ashes.

It reduces our lifespan.
Don't believe the myths and legends. We haven't needed other people's blood for over a century. Vitamin D can be bought at any corner drug store now.
And the whole 'sleep in a coffin' thing is an EXTREME exaggeration. We sleep during the day because there's not a whole lot to do during daylight hours if one can't go outdoors. And a wooden 'coffin' wouldn't protect from some of the sun's rays anyway. We need the protection of metal, stone or concrete during the daily solar storm.
About the "silver bullet" and "wooden stake" nonsense . . . hey, who WOULDN'T be killed by these. A led bullet would be just as deadly to us. We're almost as vulnerable as you, we just heal alot faster.
You should really get to know us. We're actually some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. We're having our annual American conference soon, write me for details.

I've heard various reasons. Some pertain to the fact that although they have "super-healing", their skin is quite fragile, similar to that of a newborn baby. Also, other stories say that as a vampire ages, its skin becomes 'tougher', much as a live (human) adult's skin is more durable than a human baby's skin. It is said that 'with age comes power', and the ability to withstand the sun comes with time (with new technology and that SPF 1000).

The sun thing is a Hollywood bit. There is nothing in any of the folklore to think they could not come out in the sun.
