The term "redneck" is somewhat obscure in origin. It is said to have either referred to the farmers who wore hats when they worked; the hat brim didn't cover their necks and therefore it was usually sunburned. The other definition I've heard is someone who got his hair cut so often, the back of his neck got red from being irritated by clippers. Both of those may be wrong, of course, social discourse being imprecise. However, a "redneck," as others have said, is a derogatory term for a southerner (usually male), who shows racist tendencies or social ignorance in general. Personally I don't like the term, as I dislike any sort of ethnic slur.

Not all rednecks are racist, but having known quite a few I can say that there is the stereotype for a very good reason. Most of the southern folk I have known are racist. :(

That is a racist term for someone in the south. They aren't all racist. How can you tell a white person is a racist? You can't. Same with someone from the south.

A red neck is normally a white country man/woman.
They might be racist or they might not be.

Red neck is a racist term against white people.

Why is it that people who have no intelligent conversation to contribute to any subject insist on using the race issue trying to get lots of attention?

What we need is intelligent dialogue, not everyone playing inciteful cards that only polarize those who might have a contribution to solutions.
